About the Intoxilyzer 8000
An Intoxilyzer 8000 is a fully mobile evidential infrared spectrometry breath testing machine used by local law enforcement as a method of testing an individual's blood alcohol concentration. The new piece of equipment has many advantages over the older methods, but the purpose of the machine is to more accurately determine a suspected driver's BAC. Made in the state of Kentucky by CMI, Inc., the company will not provide private laboratories with information as to how the machine works or even lease the machine out to investigators.
By using the principle of infrared light absorption to estimate the percentage of alcohol in a gas sample, the machine uses a presumed ratio of alcohol molecules in your breath to molecules in your blood. Given that not every individual will have the same amount of molecules due to lung capacity, body size and other factors, it is virtually impossible for the machine to give a completely accurate read on the .08% standard.
