The Walk & Turn Test
After an officer has pulled your vehicle over and suspects you of drinking and driving, the officer may require that you submit to a field sobriety test to determine if you are in violation of the law. One type of field sobriety test officers in San Diego have suspects submit to is the walk and turn test. The walk and turn test is when the officer requests that the driver walks heel to toe along a line for nine steps. At the end of the line, the driver is then to turn around and return heel to toe again. A test that seems quite simple to pass without difficulty if an individual is not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the walk and turn test is designed for the officer to see if the driver can listen to the instructions and perform a simple physical activity.
The police officer is looking for the driver to comply with simple standards. In order for an individual to pass this field sobriety test, the driver must not fail to exhibit more than two of the following instructions:
- The driver must be able to follow the instructions
- He or she must be able to keep balanced while walking and turning
- The driver will not need to stop to adjust balance or lose balance
- The suspect will use to heel to toe method as instructed
- The driver does not use his or her arms to keep balanced
- He or she does not take the required number of steps
