Ignition Interlock Device
San Diego DUI Attorney
With a DUI conviction you may often expedite reinstatement of your
license with installation of an ignition interlock device in your car. A device the size of a cell phone, it is attached by a dealer to your dashboard and wired to your ignition. It contains a breathalyzer which you must blow into to start your car. If you register too high, the car will not start. As you drive, periodically the device will call for you to blow again into the breathalyzer. If you flunk, it will notify you to stop the car and record the violation. If you fail to stop, it will cause the car to make annoying sounds and flashing lights but will not interfere with your driving. For guidance regarding ignition interlock devices, you are urged to contact a
DUI attorney in San Diego.
When is an Ignition Interlock Device Required?
- The judge may require installation of a device as a condition of license reinstatement.
- If you are charged with driving on a suspended license, the San Diego DMV will require proof of installation of the device.
- If you have been convicted of a second or third DUI and have served the required suspension period, the DMV requires proof of installation as a requirement for a restricted license.
